Ceiling Fans

How Do Ceiling Fans Work?

Ceiling fans are designed to circulate air without directly changing the air temperature. Ceiling fans are typically designed with 1 to 6 blades, an electric motor, and a directional switch to change the direction the blades rotate. Originally, the ceiling fan’s sole purpose was to circulate the air. But, over time these fans began incorporating a light to provide overhead lighting at the same time. The popularity of ceiling fans typically grows when there is a general increase in energy costs. Ceiling fans provide some relief from the heat with a lower operating cost than using an air conditioner.

Summertime Ceiling Fan Usage:

During the hot summer months, set the rotation of ceiling fan blades so that air blows downward. Although ceiling fans don’t change the air temperature of a room,  air movement speeds the evaporation of perspiration from your skin* and cools you off in hot weather.

* Due to the fact that evaporation works better in dry climates, summer usage of ceiling fans for cooling is more effective in dry climates.

Wintertime Ceiling Fan Usage:

During the winter, ceiling fans have a different purpose and the blades should rotate so that the air blows upward. Due to the fact that warm air is lighter than cool air, warm air tends to accumulate near the ceiling and cool air closer to the floor. The air circulation during winter months is intended to mix the warm and cold air in a room, making a consistent temperature at all levels.

Outdoor Ceiling Fans:

Outdoor ceiling fans are designed for summer usage to cool covered areas. The downdraft created by an outdoor ceiling fan cools those seated below. These fans feature materials and coatings more resistant to humidity and temperature extremes. The motor is also designed to withstand greater levels of humidity found in some outdoor applications.

Traditional Ceiling Fans:

The first ceiling fans appeared in the 1870’s. Today’s traditional-themed ceiling fans are based on the fans of the past and typically have an antique design.

Ceiling Fan Design Tip:

While you're searching for your ceiling fan, make note of your color scheme If you have Mahogany furniture, you'll want to pick a fan with the same tones to complement the room.  Fans have become as important as furniture and can help express your personality, while also being a great investment.  So take your time and search the various designs and colors before making your decision.

Outdoor ceiling fans are manufactured to handle a wider variable of natural elements. These fans are built with tough grade materials and water resistance design. Many of the styles are designed especially for a patio, while others are built to produce a steady air flow. Outdoor fans
