Tips for Compact Fluorescent CFL Bulbs

1. Place Energy Star qualified Compact Fluorescents (CFLs) in the fixtures you use most frequently. CFLs are most efficient when they operate for several hours at a time (two hours or more).

2. Select the best shape and size to fit your needs. Energy Star qualified CFLs come in a multitude of shapes and sizes.

"Spirals" are the most common type of CFL and are available in the most variety of wattages.
Covered "Globe" Bulbs are designed to replace Standard Base "G25" type bulbs and are popular in Bath Bar fixtures where the bulb is exposed.
Covered "A-Type" Bulbs look almost identical to standard bulbs. Use this type of CFL when the bulb is visable and a spiral CFL is not desired.
Candelabra Base CFLs are designed to replace chandelier type bulbs and include an adaptor for both Medium Bases and smaller Candelabra Bases.
"PAR" and "R" type CFLs are designed to replace Flood Lights that are found in many outdoor Fixtures. Please note: fixtures with a motion sensor or timer may decrease the life of the CFL bulb due to frequent on/off operation.

3. Smaller Sizes mean greater compatibility with your fixtures. Today's Energy Star qualified CFLs are designed to be smaller and thinner than ealier models, so you can install them in a wider variety of fixtures, such as wall sconces, ceiling-mounted fixtures, and ceiling fans.

4. Coose the best color temperature to fit your needs. Qualified CFLs are available in a range of color temperatures:

Warm, white light: 2,600K to 3,000K (All of our CFLs are rated at 2,650K)
Cooler, white light: 4,500K to 6,000K.

5.Specially designed CFLs are available for Dimmers and 3-Way Fixtures are available. Be sure to check the packaging to be sure you are buying the right bulb. (We currently do not carry 3-Way or Dimming specialty CFL Bulbs)

6. Use Energy Star qualified CFLs in the fixtures that are hard to reach such as ceiling fans, other ceiling fixtures, and enclosed outdoor fixtures. Because CFLs last longer, you enjoy the convenience of buying and changing bulbs less frequently.

7. Recycle CFLs Properly. Do not throw CFLs away in your household garbage if better disposal options exist. To find out what to do, check www.earth911.org or call 877-EARTH-911.
